Workshop BIPV Power Electronics

On September 11, 2018 the PV OpMaat workshop ‘BIPV Power Electronics: Design considerations and challenges |  Electrical and electronic components for the solar energy revolution 2.0 ’​ will take place.

Building-Integrated PhotoVoltaics (BIPV) applications are emerging as a way to make buildings more sustainable, and are expected to grow considerably in volume in the near future. They create specific requirements regarding the design and implementation of components, both for the PV generators and the power electronics needed to connect them to the electrical system.

In this workshop we will discuss the impact of Power Electronics (PE) interfacing with PV technology on the opportunities and new possibilities in BIPV. Existing practical experiences will be presented as input for a discussion to identify needs and prerequisites. The workshop aims to bring together parties from the fields of PE and (BI)PV to exchange ideas about the mutual requirements, desirable developments, and future trends.

Current solutions for BIPV are largely based on available components that still hold potential for optimization. We will discuss the specifications and possible system configurations tailored to the use in energy-efficient, near-zero emission buildings. Suggested solutions include module-level (DC/DC) converters and the integration into DC nanogrids, which can simplify the installation and increase the energy yield. Specifically, wide-bandgap semiconductor components can have a large impact here, by reducing the size, increasing the conversion efficiency, and providing improved reliability of such converters.

Numerous questions arise around the implementation – e.g. about sizes, power classes, current and voltage ranges, connection points, ease of assembly, certification, etc. We sincerely invite you to be part of the discussion!
